Scituate Beatification Commission Announce 2009 Award Winners

Scituate Beautification Commission Announces 2009

Front Street Merchants Flower Program Winners

Scituate, MA October 15, 2009. The Scituate Beautification Commission selected winners in two categories: flower boxes and urns, in this year’s Front Street Merchants Flower Program. The Commission awarded First Place in the Window Box category to Joye for its charming combination of geraniums, petunias, bocapa and birdhouses. First place for Urns went to Scituate Federal Savings Bank for its bountiful collection of coleus plants. Several additional businesses, including Phin’s Restaurant, Flowers & Festivities, Riva’s Restaurant and Native were recognized for their outstanding arrangements.

The Flower Box Program is part of an annual drive sponsored by the Beautification Commission to make the harbor side a more attractive place for residents and visitors to shop, dine and stroll. As part of the program each Front St. merchant is allotted a $50 voucher to purchase flowers for the purpose of enhancing their storefront. “The flower boxes garner a great deal of attention throughout the spring and summer months,” says program coordinator, Kathy Hillman. This year was no exception as Front Street Merchants delighted passersby with a dazzling display of flowers and foliage in full bloom. “With so many lovely arrangements it is always hard for committee members to choose a winner,” adds Donna Bangert, Chairperson of the Beautification Commission. From Town Pier to Satuit Brook each merchant demonstrated the beauty and charm that attracts so many visitors to this picturesque coastal community.

The Beautification Commission has plans to extend the program to additional businesses next year. Other programs sponsored by the Beautification Commission include Adopt-A-Lots and Ship-Shape Day, a Town-wide volunteer clean-up effort that takes place each spring. For more information on these community programs please visit the Scituate Beautification Commission home page at www.town.scituate.ma.us/beautification or contact the Beautification Commission directly at sbc@town.scituate.ma.us.

Public Service Reminder: Chimney-Wood Stove Safety

TOWN OF SCITUATE MASSACHUSETTS

PUBLIC SERVICE REMINDER:

CHIMNEY-WOOD STOVE SAFETY

With another cold New England winter ahead of us and the cost of home heating fuel on the rise, energy conscious people are installing wood, pellet, coal and gas stoves in their homes. It is important that people educate themselves on chimney and stove safety so they can protect their families and property throughout the winter season. All chimney and solid fuel heating appliances must be permitted, properly installed and inspected. A permit from the Building Department must be obtained prior to installation and the Building Inspector must inspect the unit prior to its use. Every solid fuel-burning appliance must have a label from the manufacturer showing all clearances. “Homemade” or unlabelled stoves are not allowed in Massachusetts. Please consider the following tips when installing and using your chimney or stove:

• Always read the manufacturer’s label and the applicable State Building Codes prior to installation for required clearances and floor protection.
• It is recommended that a licensed professional perform the installation.
• It is important to maintain at least 36 inches of space around the appliance keeping combustibles such as rugs, curtains and furniture from coming in contact with the stove.
• Solid-fuel heating appliances cannot share a common flue with chimney flues utilized by other solid-fuel, fossil fuel or gas-fired appliances.
• Remember to check and clean your chimney and stovepipe carefully each year before the heating season and make any needed repairs prior to use.
• Do not use chimney sweep logs in place of annual cleaning.
• Stove users should always dispose of ashes in a metal bucket with a lid on it. Never use plastic or cardboard boxes.
• Never leave children unattended near a chimney or stove.
• Remember to change the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year.

You can obtain a permit application from the Building Department located at Town Hall or print one from the Town of Scituate website www.town.scituate.ma.us, under the Inspections page. Please call the Building Department at 781-545-8716 if you should have any questions.

Scituate Building Commissioner
