USE OF THE TRANSFER STATION: The Transfer Station is open to Scituate Residents in vehicles with a valid Transfer Station sticker. The sticker must be attached to the vehicle on the driver's side and visible to the Attendant.

The Transfer Station is operated as a "Pay-As-You-Throw" and a Recycle facility. Household waste ("garbage") will be accepted only in Pay-As-You-Throw trash bags which can be purchased at the Transfer Station or several local retail stores. These "Blue Bags" cost $20.00 for a package of ten 30-gallon bags or $10.00 for a package of ten 15-gallon bags.

Retailers selling Pay-as-You-Throw trash bags include Scituate Pharmacy and Tedeschi's in North Scituate, Fitts Mill in Greenbush and Hennessey News and the Village Market in the Harbor. Shaws in Cohassett and Roach Brothers in Marshfield also sell Blue Bags.

RECYCLING: Recycling is mandatory in Scituate and recyclable items should not be disposed of in the Blue Bags. Items to recycle include:

• PAPER (no charge): Paper, newspaper, magazines, phone books, paper bags, catalogues, cereal boxes without wax liners, shoeboxes.
• BOOKS (no charge): Books in good condition can be left for the Friends of the Scituate Library in a designated area in the Recycle Building. Obsolete or soiled books can be disposed of in the paper recycle.
• CORRUGATED CARDBOARD (no charge): Please flatten heavy boxes.
• PLASTIC #1-#7 (no charge): All plastic items marked with recycle code #1 through #7. (Please rinse out the containers.)
• OTHER PLASTIC (a small charge might apply):Other plastic items not bearing the familiar recycle symbol must be disposed of as Bulky Waste.
• TIN AND ALUMINUM CONTAINERS (no charge): Food and beverage containers - for example: tuna, pet food, soup. (Please rinse out the containers.)
• GLASS (no charge): Mixed colors and broken glass is accepted. Be sure to leave off the aluminum lid of glass bottles when recycling. (No mirrors, windshield glass, windows, Pyrex, light bulbs or glass tableware can be accepted.)
• REDEAMABLE BOTTLES AND CANS (no charge): These can be left in the Recycle Building where volunteers from local non-profit organizations sort and return them to the manufacturer for reuse or recycling
• METAL (no charge): Includes metal shoe racks, coat hangers, pipes and plumbing fixtures, bed frames, metal shelving, lawnmowers, bicycles, etc.
• MOTOR OIL (no charge): Pour used motor oil in the designated waste oil container just outside the Recycle Building.
• OIL FILTERS (no charge): Deposit in designated container outside Recycle Building.
• ANTIFREEZE (no charge): Pour into the designated tank outside Recycle Building.
  
• CAR BATTERIES (no charge): Car and truck batteries should be place in the container just outside the Recycle Building.
• HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES (no charge): These can be left in the tubs located in the Recycle Building.
• FLUORESCENT LAMPS (no charge): Place in designated containers in Recycle Building.
  
• CLOTHING (no charge): Clean reusable clothing should be placed in the charitable organization (Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc.) container located near the Recycle Building. Damaged, soiled or otherwise unusable clothing should go into the rag collection bin.
• YARD WASTE (no charge): Drop off yard waste at the "Brush Pile" located at 161 Driftway in designated area. No charge for residents with valid Transfer Station sticker. Facility open seven days a week from 8:00 – 3:30 (except holidays.)
• FREON-CHARGED APPLIANCES ($10 per item): Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers contain Freon gas, which, by law, must be recovered by an approved vendor. You will be directed to the location at the Transfer Station where you may unload these items.
• OTHER APPLIANCES (no charge): Toasters, washers, dryers, stoves, and hot water heaters can be recycled as metal scrap.
• TIRES ($2 per auto, $8 per truck tire): Drop off in designated area.
• PROPANE TANKS ($8 for small tanks, $20 for large tanks): Drop off in designated area.
• TELEVISION AND COMPUTER CRT MONITORS ($10 each): Computers, flat screen TVs and monitors and other electronic gadgets may be disposed of for free. Drop off in designated area.
• FURNITURE ($10 per item): Drop off in designated area.
• MATTRESS SETS ($20 per mattress, $2 per box springs): Drop off in designated area.
• BULKY WASTE ($2 for the equivalent of a 30-gallon barrel or $120 per ton): Drop off in designated area.
• CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS ($120 per ton): Drop off in designated area.
• YARD WASTE AND BRUSH (no charge): Residents in vehicles with valid Transfer Station stickers may dispose of yard waste at the "Go Green!" Brush Pile located at 161 Driftway.
• TAKE-IT-OR-LEAVE-IT ($2 for the equivalent of a 30-gallon barrel or $120 per ton): All items dropped off at the Take-It-Or-Leave-It must be paid for at the Bulky Waste rate. Any item left must be clean and re-usable. There is no charge to take an item. The Take-It-Or-Leave-It will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Users are expected to help maintain a clean and orderly area.
• HAZARDOUS WASTE CANNOT BE DISPOSED OF AT THE TRANSFER STATION: The Town conducts periodic hazardous waste collection with the aid of a contractor capable of properly disposing of the material collected. These items include: oil-based paints, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, degreasers, mothballs, asbestos, wood preservatives, furniture strippers, ammunition, medical waste, radioactive waste.
